Cross Training
Aquatic exercise is a great cross-trainer. Comparing
land and water exercise, water walkers reap benefits walking 1.5-2 mph that
land walkers get at 3.5-8 mph. Oxygen uptake is comparable when walking 7 mph
on land or 1.8 mph in the water. Timewise, running 1/4 mile in the water
equals running 1 mile on land. Walking 3 mph in thigh-deep water burns 460
calories per hour! You can exercise smarter and get
better results per unit of
time by alternating the type, length, or intensity of your workout. Your body
will then become very efficient at doing what it's used to doing. By cross
training, you challenge your body in new ways, and the results are more
rewarding.
Benefits of cross training include:
- Increased calorie burning
- Improved good / lowered bad cholesterol
- Fewer overuse injuries
- Increased sports performance
- Increased use of secondary muscles
- Greater exercise adherence
